My father's passion for playing Mahler, Beethoven and Bartok on his Steinway baby grand piano accompanied my childhood. His involvement with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra led to friendships with musicians, some of whom, after an occasional dinner in our home, would play chamber music with my dad on piano in the music room my parents added to our home. During the season, he took us to BPO concerts for kids, which flew by as I sketched maestros and their orchestras under the influence of evocative rhythm, harmony and mood.
My mother's passion for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Studio Arena Theatre brought these avenues into my life at a tender age. I never was compelled to sketch actors on stage or screen (until I met Chicago's favorite Mike Nussbaum), nor did I ever sketch at the ballet as a youth. Perhaps because, although I always have loved color, energy and movement, I was graceful only when riding horses.
