After I watched the Showtime film, Sometimes in April, which captured the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, I couldn’t sleep. The brutal executions of families tormented me until, as if by rote, I gathered oil pastels and paper and released the awful turmoil writing within me in the dark before dawn. Genocide 2005: Rwanda 1994 emerged whole in a roiling stream of consciousness.
